Research Group Leaders in Computational Biology (#HUGL03)

The Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH (IMB, is a research centre situated on the campus of Mainz University, Germany. We are generously funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which have jointly committed to supporting IMB with over 250 million Euros between 2010-2027. Our research focus is on gene regulation and nuclear function and ranges from the structural and molecular level to functional genomics and systems approaches. Researchers at IMB have access to strong core facilities (including bioinformatics, cytometry, genomics, high-content microscopy and proteomics), which offer state-of-the-art services and experimental support. IMB provides a strong computational infrastructure, including access to one of the top 100 high-performance computing clusters world-wide, MOGON II.

We seek outstanding, interactive candidates with a strong publication record and an innovative research profile in bioinformatics or computational biology. Examples of topics include integrative analyses of multi-omics data; computational modelling of gene regulatory and signalling networks; single-cell analyses; multi-scale modelling and machine learning. Research topics should fall into one of the following areas: epigenetics, RNA biology, transcription, DNA damage and genome integrity, or nuclear architecture.

We welcome applications from scientists employing pure computational approaches and those combining experimental and theoretical approaches. Collaborations are encouraged with local and regional research networks, e.g. in genome stability and the neurosciences. IMB seeks to increase the number of female group leaders and explicitly encourages women to apply.

Positions are initially offered for a period of 5 years and can be extended to up to 10 years following positive evaluation. Group leader packages include an attractive salary, generous start-up funding and an annual budget sufficient to fund a postdoc, two PhD students as well as consumables and core facility services. There are no teaching obligations, but teaching opportunities are available at Mainz University. IMB is an equal opportunity employer.

To apply, please send a single PDF, containing your cover letter, CV and a concise description of your research interests and future research plans to, quoting the reference HUGL03. Please also arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to Questions can be addressed to Helle Ulrich (

The deadline for applications is 24 March 2019. Interviews will take place in Mainz on 4-5 June 2019.
